Between the Naviglio della Martesana canal and the Adda river
From Milan, on the green MM2 underground line, you can go to Vimodrone where there is one of ASP Golgi-Redaelli’s institutes. The route along the Naviglio della Martesana towpath begins here.
For those without their own bicycles, the route can begin at Cernusco sul Naviglio or at Gorgonzola (both on the green MM2 underground line), where there are bike sharing stations.
From the towpath, cycle towards the Misericordia farmstead in Bellinzago Lombardo, which is owned by ASP Golgi-Redaelli and where the Mapelli and Passoni families have their farming businesses. At the Mapelli dairy and beef farm, you can purchase fresh milk and yoghurt as well as butter and various types of cheese. The Passoni cattle and pig farm produces meat, cured meats and yoghurt, which can be purchased either from vending machines or from the farm itself. Besides being able to purchase farm products directly on site, the farm visit includes tasting fresh local produce.
From Bellinzago, take the towpath once again and cycle towards Trezzo sull’Adda to visit the Visconteo Castle, the Crivelli painting collection which has recently been opened to the public in the halls of the Villa Comunale, and the historical Taccani hydroelectric power plant.
After visiting these sights, the return journey begins. As an alternative to taking the same road back, you can go from Trezzo to Concesa where the Naviglio della Martesana canal and the Adda river separate. From here you can cross the bridge and go to the small nearby factory town of Crespi d’Adda in the Capriate S. Gervasio district, which is a fine exemplar of industrial archaeology and a UNESCO site.
You may also choose to go from Trezzo to the Vaprio district, where there is an interactive gallery ‘Leonardo in Adda’ inside the house of the water warden.
