3 – Pedalling among ‘castles’ across the countryside

Melegnano – Riozzo – Cerro al Lambro – Bascapè – Trognano – Melegnano
This route is mainly along bicycle lanes, with some short stretches only on the road.

The route begins in Melegnano, that can be reached from Milan by train. From Melegnano, where the Medicean castle houses a fine history museum, the route continues along the bicycle lane that goes to Riozzo. Here are estates that were left to the Luoghi pii elemosinieri or almoners’ charity houses by Count Giacomo Mellerio (1777 – 1847).

Keep riding along the bicycle lane until the village of Cerro al Lambro is behind you, and then take the road that leads to Bascapè. Here you can admire the castle, which was restored in 2001, and the S. Michele arcangelo church, on the right-hand wall of which is a plaque commemorating its inauguration in 1487.

From Bascapè, turn back until you come to the Trognano farm, where you can visit the farm itself and its old oratory. This is where the precious wooden nativity by the so-called Maestro di Trognano, or Master of Trognano had been kept, but which today has been entrusted to the civic art collection of Sforzesco Castle in Milan. Here the tenants will take you on a guided tour and you can purchase local farm produce.

From Trognano, ride back to Melegnano, where the route comes to an end.
